The Raise Ranch first became popular with Urbanization.  The small lots made it difficult to fit a home and a garage on the lots side by side, so where the terrain allowed for it (sloped lots) it became both fashionable and cost effective to utilize part of the basement as the garage and the other half as living space.  Most ranch plans can be modified to have and up and down stairwell entrance allowing for raised ranch applications. For small lot cost effective home designs these homes cannot be beat.
